Brentwood's Focus

Brentwood's Focus
For students who are interested in the environment, Brentwood School of Environmental Studies is a perfect choice. The school is unique in that it integrates curriculum units from the California Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) into everyday studies and every grade level focuses on a different aspect of the environment. For instance, 2nd grade centers around growing a garden, 3rd grade does a community clean-up on a weekly basis, 4th grade learns about the impacts of carbon footprint, and 6th grade participates in recycling. The different units give the students a chance to relate to everyday life and the world around them.
At Brentwood students not only get the opportunity to participate in activities that coincide with each grade levels’ focus, but students also go on educational field trips to provide additional first hand experiences. Some of the places they have gone include: California Science Center, Aquarium of the Pacific, a sawdust factory, the San Andreas Fault, the Living Desert (zoo and gardens), Riley’s Farm, Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary, and Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Plant. The field trips are intended to match what the students are learning, what they are doing on campus, and provide the students with a global look to realize what they are doing at Brentwood can affect outside of the school. Mrs. Billig says at Brentwood the staff works hard as a team to create an instructional program that works for everyone and keeps the students needs at the forefront.
